Just a Moment with Pastor Dan Baty

Looking at the disciples can give you hope. Jesus chose them knowing exactly what He was getting – impulsive, insecure, inconsistent men – and He still said, “These are My guys.” Not because they were ready for Him, but because He was ready for them. And that’s why the word faithful needs a little context. Faithfulness is good – Scripture celebrates it – but where your faithfulness comes from matters. Because it’s easy to slip into that old scoreboard of spiritual performance… that oppressive, nagging belief that God is measuring you, grading you, waiting to see how you do.

When that happens, an important question can liberate you and set you on a new course: Is Jesus enough? Enough not just for forgiveness and heaven someday, but enough to teach you what it means – for you – to be in relationship with Him. Enough to keep reorienting and refining your inner life. Enough to teach you, over years and decades, what it means to abide in Him. Because a relationship with Him is a forever journey, not a destination.

If He is enough, then the goal isn’t your faithfulness; it’s sharing life with Him – letting Him into the real places of your life and receiving what He brings in return. Then faithfulness becomes the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruit of your willpower. And it shows up in you the same way it did in the disciples – not because they were impressive, but because they stayed close to Him long enough for His life to rub off on theirs. It becomes fruit from His vineyard, not points on your scoreboard.
