May the Lord wrap an extra blanket of His comfort around the shoulders of all who are remembering loved ones who perished on this unforgettable date 25 years ago. Our church family carries its own tender sorrow, remembering our beloved member Sarah M. Clark, who was among the victims on American Airlines flight 77 when it crashed at the Pentagon.
Sarah was engaged to be married to John Wesley, another cherished member of our congregation, and together they had planned a wedding reception in Baltimore. Just the day before, she and John had gone shopping for their wedding bands.
A dedicated teacher, Sarah volunteered to chaperone a group of students – including 11‑year‑old Asia Cottom – who were traveling to Santa Barbara, California, for an ecology conference sponsored by the National Geographic Society. She agreed to accompany them because National Geographic had promised to provide computers for her classroom, a gift she hoped would open new worlds for her students.
May the memory of those lost continue to shine among us – reminding us of the preciousness of every God‑given day and of the sacred opportunity we have to express our love to those dear to us.
Lord, hold close every grieving heart, steady every trembling memory, and breathe peace into every place where sorrow still lingers. Amen.
