No matter what we have or what we’ve accomplished, we are never as secure as we would like to be. We know one false step, or one fickle turn of circumstance can create a desperate situation for any of us. The fact of the matter is we are only loosely tethered to the status quo, and it can unravel at any time. There is nothing we can humanly do to gain the absolute security we crave. That’s the bad news. The good news is God offers it as a gift.
When King David was fleeing from a military coup led by his own son, he wrote these words: “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side” (Psalm 3:5-6). Security doesn’t come from certainty about our circumstances but from faith in our Creator. Faith in the only One who sees the future as though it is the present. The only One who knows all about us and still desires us. The only One who is never powerless against life’s ups and downs but causes all things to work together for the good of those who love Him. The only One who provides supernatural peace even in the midst of titanic upheaval.
Yes, we are all vulnerable to the fickleness of people and the uncertainties of life, but we are also all eligible for the grace that provides us inner security despite external conditions. The security that comes only from our Creator and is available to us in Christ.
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
