Being a “good soldier of Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3) is not a bad thing. It is when we take our human, earthly, utilitarian notions of what a soldier is and superimpose them on God that the problem arises. Our Commander withdraws none of His affection for us, nor any of His personal attentiveness to our smallest concerns. We are not expendable. We are not part of an equation. He doesn’t deploy us with an acceptable casualties quotient in mind. We remain His beloved children even in the fiercest of battles.
