“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16).
Many years ago the Beatles sang, “Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends.” Now, there’s plenty of debate about what kind of “friends” they had in mind, but as believers in Jesus Christ, we don’t have to speculate. Scripture is wonderfully clear about the One who helps us.
He is the Holy Spirit – whom Jesus Himself calls “The Helper.” Not “The Critic.” Not “The Scorekeeper.” Not “The One Who Sighs Loudly When You Mess Up Again.” No – The Helper. Because that’s exactly what He does. He helps us live in alignment with who we now are: sons and daughters of the living God.
He helps you think like someone who is loved. He helps you walk like someone who belongs. He helps you grow into the person God already sees when He looks at you – sometimes gently, sometimes with a little holy elbow-nudge, but always with love. Always with kindness.
He lives in us and will be with us forever! And with His inspiration, guidance, encouragement, and coaching, we don’t just “get by.” We don’t just limp along. We overwhelmingly conquer – not because we’re impressive, but because our Helper is faithful, patient, and far better at this than we are.
