What is spiritual drift? Paul describes it in 2 Corinthians 11:3: “Just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.”
Spiritual drift happens when something else – often something that looks spiritual – quietly replaces devotion to Christ as our center. It can show up in a pursuit of spiritual self‑empowerment instead of faith in Christ, or when serving in ministry becomes a way to gain personal glory rather than a way to please the Lord. It can happen when we place our confidence in a spiritual leader’s personality, skill, or style instead of seeing that person as an instrument meant to lead us into a more authentic and intimate relationship with Christ Himself.
Drift is subtle, and it’s corrosive to our spiritual vitality – but we don’t have to obsess over detecting it. It happens to all of us. It’s part of being human in a fallen world with a powerful adversary. Awareness is the gift. Awareness is already the beginning of the course correction. The enemy’s strategy is subtle, but the Spirit’s coaching is stronger.
So if the Lord brings any kind of drift to your attention this week, don’t fear it and don’t shrink into shame. Simply refocus with a small prayer like, “Thank You for the awareness, Lord. Please help my devotion to You be my center today.” Adjustment is part of relationship‑building with Christ. He is with us and promises always to be so – no matter how far you’ve drifted.
