Temptation isn’t only the urge to do the wrong thing – for a believer, its most persistent form is the subtle pull to believe the wrong thing. To cradle a view of ourselves that contradicts the one God has already spoken.
Thomas Merton captured it well: “The biggest human temptation is to settle for too little.” And some of the most damaging “too little” things we settle for are the shrunken, shadowed versions of ourselves influenced more by fear, frustration, and failure than by grace.
When our sense of who we are in Christ becomes corrupted, our offering to others contracts with it. Shame is like a dimmer switch; it reduces our light and our love.
So as you begin your week, refuse the smallness. Don’t settle for a diminished view of who you are to the Lord. Thank Him for the celebrity status that is yours because of Christ. Let Him loosen your grip on the lesser notions you’re tempted to entertain. For His truth about you is infinitely larger, richer, and more glorious than the one we’re inclined to accept.
“For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless…” (Ephesians 1:4).
