Scripture Reference: Psalms 63:1-11 (NIV)
David knew that God could satisfy his soul as with the richest of foods. Even though his body was in a dry and weary place where there was no water.
Main Idea: The living water of the Spirit fills us and flows through us to accomplish God’s purposes.
1. Soul Thirst
• These words of David contain good news and bad news. The bad news is thirst is very unpleasant. The good news is he knew where it could be satisfied: “my soul thirsts for You.”
• Many people seek to quench their soul-thirst through various means, but nothing external can fully quench the thirst of the human soul. That place is reserved for our Creator.
2. Personal Reflection
• The phone call from my sister, asking for some biblical perspective on what is going on.
• I feel the chaos and the concern, too, Jesus is still building His church, and God is using this to position the world for His eternal purposes.
• But we’ve been here before. We know what a dry and weary land looks and feels like.
• The Lord is my light and my salvation! Whom shall I fear?
3. Historical Reflection
• Jesus calmed the storm and asked His disciples, “Where is your faith?”
• It’s a question He asks of us today. It’s a question we would do well to ask ourselves. Where is your faith?
o Is it in the wisdom of God or the power of man?
o Is it in my righteousness or in Christ’s?
o Is it in what others say of me, what the evil one says of me, or even what I say of me. Or is in what God says of me.
o It’s a question that can be a balm to a restless spirit, a troubled heart, and a worried mind. Where is your faith?
4. Faith Focus
• “He’s Doing It” mug reminds me in these times when everyone is wondering what to do, God already has a plan.
• As believers it’s not our job to come up with the plan but to surrender to God’s use of us in His plan.
• The important thing is not the size or scope of our work but surrendering our hearts to the good works the Lord prepared beforehand for us to walk in each day.
5. The Living Water of the Spirit
John 7:37-39 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said: ‘Streams of living water will flow from within him. He was speaking about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive.
Living Water is the effects of the Spirit who dwells within
• It’s like smoke from a fire.
• Like the music from a piano.
• It’s like the breeze that dances through the trees.
• Like the fragrance from a blooming flower.
• Like the warmth from a glowing hearth.
• Like the light from the rising sun.
• It’s the fruit of the Spirit, filling us on the inside and flowing from us to the outside.
• He turns on the light of God’s truth and brings truth to life.
Conclusion
• God has the plan. And each one of us is part of it. Each of us is a vessel of the living water of the Spirit.
• Let our prayer be: “Lord, keep us! Lest our feet stray from the places our God where we met Thee. Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world we forget thee.”
• The Spirit who gives living water, lives in us. And He makes all the difference!
“Like rivers born in grace, The Spirit’s living waters fill us, And through our lives, His purpose flows.” Amen.
