Text: “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed… but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect… (1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV)
I. Perishable Things
• Silver and Gold
• Physical beauty
• Being smart
• The opinions of people.
II. Precious Blood
• Not the blood of bulls and goats.
• Jesus’s blood was not just shed or spilled; it was spent. A spill is an accident. Every drop of His blood was payment.
• Jesus knew where every drop of His blood was going and what it was being spent on.
III. Redeemed
Redeemed. Bought from the bondage of sin.
• Imagine living behind a prison wall, with razor wire on top. That is sin. It separates us from God.
Redemption involves two words forgiveness and justification.
• Forgiveness means you are pardoned. We may still sin, but we are no longer prisoners. Jesus rescued us from us from the prison of sin.
• Justification means not only are you forgiven, but you are also promoted.
• 2 Corinthians 5:19 tells us that in Christ, God is no longer counting our sins against us. Because Christ has given us His righteousness.
• Don’t act like you are on parole. Instead, always draw near to God with humility of heart, confidence in His love and gratitude for His grace.
IV. Communion is an opportunity for all of us to express our Appreciation
• Only the love of the Father that commissioned Him to come. It was only the love of Jesus that caused Him to accept. As we take the bread, let it remind us of the love that embraced us while we were yet sinners, and become a prayer to help us to trust in that love. As we drink from the cup, let it be a reaffirmation of our faith in the Lord’s blood as our only claim to righteousness and to His favor.
