I asked myself, “Would you rather have the diamonds lying on the ground or the mine from which they came?”
That is the essential faith question we face each day. Consider the following examples.
“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands (i.e. the diamonds) have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the LORD your God (i.e. the mine), for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth…” (Deuteronomy 8:17-18).
“Trust in the Lord (the mine) with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding (the diamonds)” (Proverbs 3:5).
Jesus even applied it to the Scriptures themselves. He said to the religious leaders who were antagonistic towards Him, “You diligently study the Scriptures (the diamonds) because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about Me (the mine), yet you refuse to come to Me to have life” (John 5:39). The Scriptures – like every other good thing in life – become the treasure God intended them to be to us as we remember trusting in Him as the Mine is the intended purpose of them.
We want to grasp and hoard the diamonds because we wrongly assume what’s in the mine is uncertain. But the truth is the Mine is the living God. He is everlasting and inexhaustible, and He contains far more wealth in His person than all the diamonds of earth lying on the surface.
