This morning, in addition to my usual spoken prayers, I spent five minutes in silent thanksgiving before the Lord, focusing specifically on His love for me. It was a time of offering up my silent appreciation without uttering a single word. This practice is rooted in the belief that the Lord knows our hearts and understands our unspoken thoughts and feelings, as David acknowledged: “All my longings lie open before You, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from You” (Psalm 38:9).
Silent prayer offers a unique opportunity to deepen our relationship with the Lord. By dedicating specific times to different purposes—thanksgiving, support for loved ones, personal finances, work issues, or simply praise—we create a new, sacred space for connection. During those five minutes, I set my heart before the Lord, trusting that He was attentively listening and understanding my heart’s message.
If you’d like to try this, it’s simple. Choose a focus for your silent prayer, whether it’s thanksgiving, concern for a friend, worries about the world, or pure adoration. To help you focus, say something like, “Lord, I want to offer up five minutes of silence before You for…” You can even set a timer, if you like. Then, let your thoughts about that issue or person flow freely, trusting that the Lord is receiving your unspoken words. Don’t stress over concentrating. If your mind wanders, inject a brief prayer about whatever it was and return to your purpose. The Lord looks at the intent of your heart, not your powers of concentration. This dedicated time of silence can become a valuable part of your time with the Lord and a practical way to exercise trust in Him.
