During my personal time with the Lord, I praised Him for His surpassing empathy. I pondered how He is able to sit with each of us in our respective places of joy or sorrow, excitement or dread and empathize with all of us at the same time. In the joy of a newborn and in the sudden death of a toddler. In the exhilaration of being hired for a new job and in the disorienting and fearful place of losing a job. In receiving a clean bill of health and in getting a devastating diagnosis. He is with all of us in all of it, not just spiritually but emotionally. Not as a passive observer but as a loving and caring parent. How can He take it? As a pastor, I need time to recover after just a couple hospital visits. So, what He does is simply unfathomable. It made my heart cry out, “How great is our God!”
“Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15) is a directive from the Lord to us, but it is also a picture of how the Lord is with us.
