Last night before drifting off to sleep, the thought crossed my mind: We instinctively underestimate the Lord. It’s not necessarily unbelief, but human nature. And I don’t think it’s something we can fully overcome this side of heaven. Because “His greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3). “Unsearchable” doesn’t mean “hard to find.” It means you could search forever and still not reach the edges.
We have built‑in limits. Limited perspective. Limited imagination. Limited capacity to grasp the scale of who He is. Even on our best days, we’re trying to understand God with tools that are too small – like standing at the edge of the ocean with a teaspoon. You can scoop, but you’ll never get the whole thing. So of course we underestimate Him. We expect God to work in ways that make sense to us. But He often answers, provides, or leads in ways we didn’t see coming.
We assume God will act based on our past experiences. But He acts based on His character and our unseen highest good. We worry about running out – time, strength, money, options – even faith. God never operates from shortage. He has no limits, so He isn’t restricted the way we are. We run on batteries. He doesn’t.
And yet, because of His unfathomable love and all‑surpassing grace, He doesn’t require us to overcome our human nature in order to know Him. He meets us in ways scaled to our capacity. Like a good teacher who doesn’t dump the whole subject on you at once but introduces it step by step – He reveals Himself in layers we can actually absorb. He lets us “taste and see” what we can’t fully describe or comprehend, revealing enough of Himself to draw us closer, one glimpse at a time.
