(A meditation on my “birthday verse.”)
Whenever I get sidetracked, bogged down, or my lights go out on a dark road, the Lord often brings me back to these powerful words He spoke during His earthly ministry: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent” (John 6:29). In other words, faith in Christ is not the means to doing God’s work, it is the work.
It is a reminder to not place my emphasis on doing the job “right,” but on doing the right job, which is to believe in Him. Believing in Him is work that, instead of draining us, actually fills us with peace joy and perseverance. That is because we stop expending energy trying to force outcomes and begin to trust in Him for results.
What He said so many times in the Scriptures, He repeats to us today: “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Not in “belief” itself, but in Him.
