We never want our faith to be lethargic and without focus. But nor do we want to place our faith in the intensity of our prayers. We do not want to be like the prophets of Baal, jumping and shouting and flagellating themselves as they prayed to their god, which prompted the prophet Elijah to taunt: “Shout louder! … Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened” (1 Kings 18:27).
If sincerity of heart takes us to loud cries unto the Lord, so be it. If it takes us to a place of few words, or no words at all, so be it. If it takes us to jubilant shouts or silent tears, let it be so. Our faith is not in the power of our prayers – regardless of their style – but in the One who receives them.
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
