Gratitude cannot be manufactured; it is a gift from above. We can give thanks as an act of our will, but we cannot “will” our hearts to be grateful. Giving thanks is an action; gratitude is a heart condition. Giving thanks can help facilitate gratitude but it is not the same thing. We give thanks. God gives gratitude.
Gratitude is a genuine, heartfelt appreciation for what we have, accompanied by the awareness that we didn’t acquire it on our own. It is a godly “high,” with joy, contentment, praise, and adoration of our God as its effects.
Gratitude is like fire. It warms our disposition towards others. It tenderizes hard and unloving attitudes and judgmental perspectives. And it boils life down to its essential ingredients, separating it from the crust of less important concerns.
Today, let us give thanks to the Lord for the gift of gratitude.
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
