“Little children, guard yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21)
An idol is anything we rely on as the primary source of our security, happiness or significance. An idol is not any one thing in particular, it is the inappropriate value we attach to anything. And the reason we are instructed to guard ourselves from idols is because idols simply cannot do what our God can do. Nor can they be to us what He can be to us. He knows who we are. He knows what we think. He knows what we feel. He knows what we want. He knows what we need. He gives impeccable attention to all the details of our lives. His way is perfect, and He is perfect in all His ways. He is the fullness our hearts seek. He is the satisfying substance our souls crave. He is the Life we were designed to enjoy. He wants us to seek Him above all else because He wants us to have the best. And He is simply the best.
