This, just in time for the first full football weekend.
In the game of football, a touchdown is a very good thing – unless your team cannot score any. If touchdowns are the standard of success, not scoring enough of them is a curse.
According to the scriptures, “Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out” (Deuteronomy 27:26). The Law (which includes The Ten Commandments) was a good thing. It describes a moral goodness that, if we were all to follow, would make the world a much better place. The problem is all of us fall short of scoring enough “moral touchdowns” to win God’s favor.
So, Jesus, entered the “transfer portal” and came from heaven to join Team Mankind, and what a wonder He was. He scored and scored and scored and scored for us. So much so, that He “fulfilled all the requirements of the Law” (Romans 8:1-4) for us.
Not only did He earn God’s favor for us, but He also removed all the stigma of our past as “losers.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law (“loser” status) by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a [cross]” (Galatians 3:13).
In short, God did not lower His standards in order to accept us. Instead, He sent Christ to meet the standard for us. Everyone who puts their faith in Him becomes part of His winning team and forever champions with Him.
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
