As a believer, I do not spend time with the Lord in order to prove my love for Him, nor to insure His love for me. I know from His word and from experience that His unfathomable love for me is also unconditional and eternal. I can neither increase it nor detract from it by my actions or inaction.
Therefore, having this assurance, I spend time with Him to appreciate and absorb His unchanging love for me. I am taking the time to internalize and “to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that [I] may be filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). I am orienting myself to my beloved status so that as I face the various experiences of my day, I see myself through that lens and respond accordingly.
