In the last hours before He was arrested and subsequently crucified, Jesus prayed, “Father, just as You are in me and I am in You, may they also be in us…” (John 17:20-21). What a marvelous thing to ask! We often say we invited Jesus into our lives, but the reality is He invited us into His. When we accepted His invitation, we became a part of the life Jesus enjoyed with the Father and the Spirit before the world began. Of the Spirit, Jesus said, “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you” (John 16:14). From His indwelling presence we experience their joy; we experience their love; we experience their peace. He gives us glimpses of the world through His eyes and keeps the hope of eternity with Him alive within us. He imparts to us what the hymn writer aptly called “a foretaste of glory divine;” the very life of God! Receiving Christ resulted in more than life in the hereafter; it meant receiving the eternal life of the living God right now!
