How does this familiar Bible passage strike you?
“I urge you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” -Romans 12:1-2 (NASB77).
For me, this passage used to read as a statement of Christian commitment to godly values, resisting the pull of the world’s “advertisements” of what true life is, and applying myself to the directives of Scripture.
That interpretation is not incorrect, but I have asked myself some questions that provide a different perspective. Here they are:
1. Is there anything better to do with my body than to present it to the One who knows me best and loves me most?
2. People consider it an honor to serve “at the pleasure of” the president. Is there any greater honor than to serve the King of Kings?
3. Is there anything more soul-filling than His nearness?
4. Is there any greater cause or purpose than one of eternal significance?
These questions were, for me, worth taking just a moment to consider today.
