Giving thanks to the Lord in every circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18) not only pleases Him, but it also helps us to realize what is true beyond what is only apparent. For instance, the reality is that God’s faithfulness is unwavering, even when we find ourselves in situations we’d prefer to avoid. Thanking Him for His faithfulness helps us to become mentally, spiritually and emotionally aware of His faithfulness. Similarly, thanking Him for the pleasant things in our lives helps us realize He is the Source of all good things. Thanking Him for His work in our lives helps us recognize His active presence – even on days when we feel sluggish or stagnant. Therefore, giving thanks to the Lord is not merely a courteous gesture we give to Him; it is also a practical tool that helps us internalize the reality of our secure and immeasurably abundant life in Christ.
