We have been made eternally righteous by the blood of Christ, and we are also called to earthly godliness as His people. But godliness begins with our hearts, not our habits. If our hearts are the Lord’s, godly habits will follow. But merely focusing on controlling our habits doesn’t mean the Lord has our hearts. We see this in the Lord’s sorrow over the heartless habit of worship coming from His people, “These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me” (Matthew 15:8).
The kind of godliness that pleases the Lord is fueled by our relationship with Him, as we engage Him sincerely in spirit and in truth, as we give thanks to Him and as we trust in Him. True godliness is not only what others see, it is what God sees – and He sees the heart.
