A quiet rain on a Saturday morning, the golden glow of a summer evening, shared laughter with a friend, the embrace of true love, the exhilarating freedom of the first morning of vacation—these moments, sweet yet fleeting, whisper of something beyond themselves. They hint at a joy that does not fade, a love that does not end, a beauty unbound by time.
The greatest pleasures of this life are but shadows and samples of what is to come—like the small tasting cups in a grocery store, offering just a glimpse of something greater. They are but a foretaste of glory divine.
Marriage, love, beauty—all the experiences we cherish on this earth are gifts meant for our enjoyment, but they are not the full feast; they are appetizers of a deeper, eternal reality. They stir within us a longing for something more. Something complete. Something unfading and eternal. Something otherworldly.
C.S. Lewis put it this way: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
The best of earth’s offerings still leaves us wanting, for they are merely a preview of the fullness that awaits. So, we are wise to savor these moments yet not mistake them for the ultimate reality. Let us enjoy the samples, while setting our hearts on the banquet to come.
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
