Back in college, in the days of platform shoes, printed shirts, and bell-bottomed pants, a State Discount Day was a beautiful Friday when my classes were winding down. I’d roam Michigan State’s campus, and the highlight of the day was stopping by State Discount drug store to buy a new album, usually $3.99 ($4.15 with tax). If Earth, Wind & Fire had released something new, it was mine upon sight.
Then I’d head to the Stereo Shoppe to talk tech and sample the latest components. And just a few paces down the street was Linn’s Camera Shop, where George sold me my first 35mm SLR camera. A State Discount Day carried the anticipation of joy – the joy of discovery and the possibility of something good.
Looking back, those days weren’t just fun, they were a glimpse of something deeper. They were a preview of the kind of joy that doesn’t fade with age. Now, years later, I still have State Discount Days. They’re no longer tied to a campus or a purchase, but to my relationship with Christ. Not to religion or pious behavior or rituals, but to my personal connection with Him. He is the store now. When I think of spending time walking with Him, I feel that same State Discount Day anticipation of joy I once felt walking to the store. For “in His presence, there is fullness of joy and pleasures forever” (Psalm 16:11). That college joy was a precious sample, a glimpse of something deeper. And I am blessed now to be connected with its Source.
What might your own State Discount Day look like, a moment when you feel free, connected to Christ, and open to His joy? It’s something worth taking just a moment to consider today.
