From the beginning, people have known the power of the elements. They sacrificed to gods of sun and storm, fire and flood, because they knew they were powerless against them. The elements seemed to rule then, and they seem to rule now.
We can build our cities, engineer our environments, and design our comforts, but we cannot command the elements they rest upon. An earthquake can topple the strongest tower. A fire can consume the richest estate. A tsunami can sweep away a coastline. We cannot regulate how hot the sun will blaze or how bitter the winter will bite, or how much rain will fall.
But Jesus did what no human could. He merely spoke to the wind and the waves, and they obeyed. He demonstrated that He is not only Lord of our souls, but Lord of creation itself. The storm that terrifies us is subject to Him. The forces that overwhelm us bow to His voice.
Scripture doesn’t say God delights in destruction. It says creation itself groans under the weight of sin (Romans 8:22). But even in that groaning, Christ’s authority is supreme. The One who commands creation is the same One who secures our souls. And in His authority, we find our peace.
Something to take just a moment to consider today.
