“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?” (Matthew 6:25).
Jesus’ question is rhetorical. We know there is more to life than being preoccupied with getting food and clothing. He did not say food and clothing are unnecessary, just that there is more to life than survival.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I want the “more” Jesus is talking about. I want the “more” He has in mind for me. Not the “more” the world is advertising. Not the “more” others are prescribing for me. Not even the “more” I have in mind for myself. (The Creator is far more creative than the creature.)
Later in this passage Jesus explains where this “more” comes from: Seeking. Life as Jesus understands it, life as Jesus gives it can only come from seeking His kingdom and His righteousness. For those of us who by faith in Christ are already citizens of His kingdom and who already have His righteousness, it means seeking Him for how He wants to manifest those realities through each of us while we are here on earth. It means shifting our energy from worrying about life to seeking Him for what it means to live.
