Growing closer to the Lord happens in the context of our everyday lives, especially as we seek to love others. Love, as God defines it, is often an intense spiritual battle: accepting others as He accepted us, forgiving as He forgave us, giving without expecting anything in return, and considering others more important than ourselves. These are not easy, sentimental acts. Instead, this kind of love is what I call “The Battle of Love Mountain.” It’s like climbing a mountain under enemy fire as we seek higher ground. But the Lord is not above our struggle, watching with amusement. He is right in the battle with us, leading, directing, and caring for our wounds. He celebrates our progress, not judging our imperfections, because battles are never perfect. The rewards of our struggle are not necessarily in what we receive from others, but in a deeper trust in Him and a stronger attraction to Him, which is far more precious than any earthly compensation. As Jesus said after setting an example of love for His disciples by washing their feet, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” (John 13:17). Regardless of the response we receive, we are the true beneficiaries of the love we strive to give. So, take on “Love Mountain” today with your eyes fixed on Him.
