Sometimes one of the best approaches to managing life’s unpleasantries is to face them head-on and just acknowledge them for what they are. Whether they come from our circumstances or from within—our own moods, attitudes, or dispositions—there’s no need to pretend they don’t exist, to try to comb their hair, disguise them with pretty bows, or to attempt to turn them into lemonade. Instead, look them square in the eyes and say, “You know, you’re really ugly—and you smell bad, too. I can’t make you any less hideous or freshen you up, but I know Someone who can turn your ugly unpleasantness into something surprisingly beautiful. Let’s go see Him.”
Then, take that unpleasantness by the hand and lead it into the presence of the Lord, whose sanctuary welcomes us with the words: “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too difficult for Me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). Some appointments will be longer than others, but His touch can turn ugliness into a masterpiece.
When I shared this with my wife, she said, “Uh uh, you’re being way too kind to it. That’s why you’re the pastor. I wouldn’t take it by the hand; I’d throw a rope around it and drag it behind me.”
So, no matter how you do it, just make sure they get there. He’s got this.
