Do you know why you can freely and openly tell the Lord all your secrets? Even the shameful ones that you wouldn’t dare share with anyone else? Because He knows the whole story, not just about what you did, said or thought in a given episode of your life, but the whole story of you. He knows who you are and every single factor that has influenced how you are, how you got to be the way you are. We never have to shade, parse, spin, justify or rationalize our attitudes or actions before Him. On the contrary, we are extorted to “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge” (Psalm 62:8).
The reason the Lord extends this invitation for full disclosure is because, as it says, He wants to be our refuge not our judge, which is the lie the evil one uses to torture us with shameful silence. Don’t let him bully you. Instead, as the old hymn reminds us, “Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer,” not expecting Him to “lower the boom,” but to nourish you with truth and shelter you with His care.
