Imagine standing at a crossroads with either a suitcase or a Ziploc bag of money. To your left, you see an imposing idol—glittering with gold and silver, symbolizing the love of money, false security, and fleeting happiness. To your right is the radiant throne of God. Its light is warm and inviting, enveloping you in love and divine assurance.
As you stand at this spiritual juncture, a pivotal question presents itself: Where will you deposit your money? Will you lay it at the feet of the Lord, or will you sacrifice it to the idol? To lay it at the feet of the idol is to strengthen the grip of its oppressive and deceptive control over your life. This idol promises much but delivers little, offering only the illusion of security, stability, and joy. For you can never spend enough or save enough to fill the soul’s deepest longings or protect your life from distress.
When you choose the Lord, your giving becomes an investment in trust. Trust, just like money, grows, but unlike money, it produces guaranteed dividends. These include unshakeable security, surpassing peace, the joy of the Lord, and fullness of life. These dividends are yours regardless of your circumstances because they are not only paid to you, but they are also paid in you. These are the true treasures of life.
How much to invest is a matter of the heart. Under the New Covenant, we are directed to give regularly, in accordance with our income, and only to the boundary of our cheerfulness. For the Lord loves a cheerful giver and explicitly directs us not to give grudgingly. We can speak honestly to the Lord about where we are with our finances without fear of condemnation or judgment. He will meet us there in love. Know that He wants to expand our boundaries of cheerfulness and our giving, not because He wants our money but because it represents growing trust in Him, and that is life’s greatest treasure. May God bless your investment in trust this week.
