Years ago, my seven-year-old son, posed a riddle: “Dad, what’s the one thing you can never have?” His answer was stunningly insightful: “More.” He went on to explain how once you get more of something, it’s no longer “more; it becomes what you have – leaving “more” still out there. His point was not about how much we can acquire or accomplish but how fleeting is the satisfaction we have once we get it.
Indeed, all earthly things have limited ability to provide the fullness of soul we crave at the core of our being. According to the Scriptures, they are like broken cisterns that cannot hold water (Jeremiah 2:13). However, when the Lord is our “more,” He becomes both the satisfaction of our deepest longing and the invitation for more. Seeking to know Him better is stepping into ever-expanding peace, joy, and delight. For He is both Enough and More at the same time.
