We usually hear the biblical phrase “you don’t know what today will bring” (Proverbs 27:1) as a warning against, presumption, procrastination and pride. And that is the author’s primary intent. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.
But there’s another side to that phrase, a positive one, that can be a blessing to consider. When we’re sitting in discomfort, discouragement, or even despair, we still don’t know what today may bring. And that’s good news. Because anything can break in at any moment. A conversation you didn’t expect. An introduction you didn’t see coming. A fresh angle. A wild idea that suddenly makes sense. Any one of those – by itself or all tangled together – can shift not just your day, but the whole direction of your life.
And if you look at Scripture, that’s exactly how most of the life-changing moments show up: unannounced, unscheduled, and right on time.
So stay humbly dependent on the Lord. Receive the always-sufficient grace He provides. Stay watchful and thankful. You have every reason to hope forward because you really don’t know what a day may bring.
