| Many years ago the Beatles sang, “Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends.” There is much speculation about what “friends” they were referring to, but as believers in Jesus Christ, the Lord is clear about the Friend who helps us get by. He is actually named “The Helper” because that is what He does. Prior to putting our faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit “convicts” our conscience about our sins so we become aware of our need for Christ. After we come to Christ, His role changes. He no longer convicts us of sin (because our sins are forgiven). Instead, He inspires us to live in alignment with our identity as sons and daughters of the living God. So precious is His presence within us, He is literally referred to as a “gift.” Through His guidance, coaching, encouragement and reminding, we don’t just “get by,” we overwhelmingly conquer. |
