Memorial Day is really not, in the truest sense of the word, a “holiday,” which the dictionary defines as “a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done.” It is instead an all-day memorial service for real people who had real lives, and who really died in defense of our nation. It is a day appropriately commemorated with grateful solemnity and reflection. If Independence Day is a celebration of our resolve for liberty, Memorial Day is a yearly reminder of the invoice for that liberty, and a day to thank God for those who paid most dearly for it.
