I didn’t know who the woman was, but she was wearing the absolute biggest… no, this thing was the most gargantuan hair bonnet I had ever seen in my life. She was putting stuff in her car, and I said to her, as I pointed to my head, “I’d just like to know where I can get one of those.”
Surprised that I was talking to her, she checked me out for a quick second and then flashed a smile that was followed by a chuckle. Then, still smiling she said, “Have a nice day,” got in her car and drove away. That was it. A brief and simple exchange. But as I walked away, I was smiling too, and I realized the smiles we elicit from others not only brighten their day but also brightens our own. It is biblical algebra: “A generous man will prosper, and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25).
Be a smile maker this week and watch your own smile quotient increase.
