There are prayers we regularly lift to the Lord, and it’s just human nature to do so at times by rote. That is, without fully investing our attention or faith in them. So here is a reminder that the Lord hears and receives our prayers, and unlike us He does not lose focus or interest just because they are familiar. He is not less attentive because He’s heard it all before and already knows where we are going with our request. He is always in the moment with us – and even more than we are.
I distinctly remember a time when I wasn’t taking my prayer very seriously and the Lord instantly answered it in such a specific and dramatic way it filled me with awe. All I could do in that moment was lift my eyes to heaven and say, “Whoa!” It was a reminder that He is indeed the living God, and He was saying to me, “Yes. I really am listening, seriously, even when you are not taking your prayers seriously.”
In a moment of clarity, David addressed Him simply as, “You who answer prayer…” (Psalm 65:1). And indeed, He does.
