“Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name” (Psalm 86:11). This prayer of David’s is for something more than willpower to follow God’s commandments. It is an appeal to understand God’s ways. It is a desire to “get it” not to just “do it.”
In sports, coaches often talk about the difference between a player who knows how to play the game and one who truly understands the game. David is asking for understanding, an understanding that produces a heart that truly appreciates and trusts in the name (i.e., the character and person) of His creator.
This is not something we can force, but it is something we can desire and request. And it makes all the difference in how we experience our faith walk this week.
