Consider a sponge in the ocean. Though it is surrounded by water, its capacity to absorb it is limited by its size and anatomy. In the same way, the love of God that surrounds us is so expansive and deep it far exceeds our human ability to fully internalize it. On those occasions when we are in touch with even a few ounces of it we too become saturated. And yet, there is so much more of it to experience.
Perhaps that is why the apostle Paul prayed for divine intervention to help God’s people grasp what cannot be fully grasped, that is “to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled [beyond human capacity] to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19). As a result of that experiential knowledge of His love, life as we know it becomes richer. Our own love becomes purer, stronger and deeper.
It is also the reason when this life is over, we will receive new, supernatural bodies. No longer like sponges, but eternal beings with ever-expanding capacity to enjoy the infinite wonders of His love.
