I used the Rory’s Storytelling Cubes (pictured) as prompts for my morning devotional. Here’s what I came up with:
In the land of Maryland, there lived a man named Dan from Saginaw. Every morning, he began his day with a quiet time of reflection and gratitude. One day, seeking a fresh perspective, Dan decided to use Rory’s Story Cubes as prompts for his meditation on Jeremiah 9:23-24, a passage that highlights the supreme value of understanding and knowing God. Dan rolled the nine dice, and one of the cubes showed a key. This reminded him that for many years, that passage had been central to his life, symbolizing the unlocking of any door—whether of circumstance or mood—and allowing the light of truth to enter.
As Dan pondered this, the next cube he selected was a smiling face, reflecting his inner joy in having this key, a joy as exhilarating as a skydiver’s leap, which is fueled by the belief that his parachute—depicted on the third cube—will open. Each day, Dan faced life with the hope that understanding and knowing his Creator better, and growing in trust of His love, would always be his parachute.
For Dan, this truth was his home, as displayed on the fourth cube. “Home” meant familiar, stable, nourishing, safe, secure, welcoming, and accepting. Everything he valued most was housed within that truth. If a fire broke out, it would be the most important thing for him to salvage.
Like many people, Dan was sometimes terrified, like the child on the fifth cube, by the shadows of his past, the challenges of the present, and the uncertainties of the future. But he found comfort in knowing that his Creator was not keeping an account—like the abacus on the sixth cube—of his sins, and was using all the parts of Dan’s life to deepen his experience of that supreme truth.
In his pursuit of understanding and knowing God, Dan sometimes felt like the alien on the seventh cube among his neighbors. They could not always understand his passionate quest, yet he was fully invested in it. Knowing his Creator was like the strong tower on the eighth cube, a place of refuge and strength, even if others saw it as a weakness. This understanding and knowledge were his shield of faith, capable of extinguishing all the flaming arrows of the evil one, the deceptive dragon of the final cube that lurked in the shadows.
And so, Dan continued his journey, key in hand, with a smile on his face, his heart parachuted by hope, securely at home, unafraid of being an alien in a world that often misunderstood him, and always fortified by the strong tower of his knowledge of his God, ever ready to face the dragon’s fire.
