“The Strength of Weakness”

August 31, 2022 By Dan Baty Leave a Comment

Sometimes I feel like I am ready to conquer the world.  I’m sharp.  I’m energized.  I’m fully confident in my inner resources to handle the challenges before me.  And then there are those other times…

Thank the Lord that He doesn’t require us to be strong people.  Instead, He exhorts us to be strong in the Lord.  That means whether I feel up to the challenge or the challenge looks like the school bully that everyone fears, the Lord’s strength is available to me.  I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I do the math on the equation of His strength compared to mine, I keep coming up with a lot more on His side.

As it is written, “God is our refuge and strength…” (Psalm 46:1).  I am also reminded of 1 Samuel 30:6, which reads, “Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him… but David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.”  The apostle Paul’s words, recorded in 2 Corinthians 12:10 also offer support: “When I am weak, then I am strong.”

I’ve chosen to view weakness not as a call to muster up own my strength, but to “abandon ship” from self-reliance and to hop in the lifeboat the Lord sends to lead me to Himself.
