The View from My Place – “A Cappella Awareness”

February 4, 2026 By Dan Baty Leave a Comment

I know this is just my personal opinion, but I don’t think there’s an instrument on earth more beautiful than the human voice. We’ve invented pianos, violins, synthesizers, and whatever that thing is they use in sci‑fi movie soundtracks – but nothing beats a voice.

That conviction deepened this morning as I sat under a cappella worship from artists with every kind of voice, style, and background. Some sang solo – a single unaccompanied voice carrying me through an entire song. Quartets and choirs poured out passion, joy, and faith. Some sang of how He rescued us from the life we once knew. Others celebrated the way He cares for us day by day. Still others rejoiced in the certain hope of His return, when we will all be gathered together in eternity.

As I listened to song after song – lyrics written by men and women straining to capture even a sliver of the infinite wealth that is ours in Christ – a door opened. It became more than music. My heart swelled as I recognized my own story in their words. I remember how being “saved” was once just a religious phrase; it isn’t anymore. I understand how Someone I’ve never seen can be “altogether lovely” and a “precious Redeemer and Friend.” And I was struck again by how each voice was giving expression to the shared experience of knowing the living Christ.

My journey of faith was freshly affirmed and refueled by the Spirit of God, carried on the voices – just the voices – of men and women who, like me, have “tasted and seen that the Lord is good.”
