The View from My Place (My weekly meditation)
I remember watching the movie, The Ten Commandments as a child. I was somewhere between the ages of 7-10. I was so impressed by the interaction between Moses and God I prayed, “God, I want to work for You when I grow up.” I didn’t want to be a pastor; what I was really after was the relationship I saw portrayed between Moses and God. I want God to talk to me and to be my friend like that.
This wasn’t a recurring prayer, and over the years I forgot about it. But God didn’t. After I came to faith in Christ, I remembered that prayer, and today I realize God has given me far more than I requested. I have a relationship with Him that is even better than I imagined.
God would place His Spirit upon Moses, but His Spirit did not live in Moses, like He does in me. Moses had to climb a mountain or go to a special tent to meet with God. I can meet with Him any place and any time. And as the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend, He has made me not only a friend, but also a beloved member of His family and a fellow-heir with Christ.
One day Moses said to Joshua, who was like Moses’s #2, that he wished the Lord would put His Spirit on all God’s people. Perhaps, like me, Moses didn’t know the Lord was listening, but God has answered that request. The Lord declared “I will pour out My Spirit on all people” (Joel 2:28-32). And so, it has come to pass; all God’s people have a relationship with God like Moses’s and beyond it.
