When the angel announced to Mary that she would become the mother of our Savior, and faced with the impossibility of being able to fully grasp what it meant or to make it happen in her own power, Mary’s response was, “Behold, the Lord’s bond-servant; may it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
All biblical instructions and directives become glorious promises instead of intimidating commandments when we adopt the humble attitude of our Lord’s mother. How freeing it is when we are challenged by a scripture passage that seems beyond our ability or even our desire to see it realized in our life for us to prayerfully surrender our hearts to the Lord and with reliance upon His Spirit say, “Let it be done to me according to Your word, Lord.”
As faith in Christ was the means to our salvation, so it is also the means to our sanctification. The truest approach to becoming all that God wants us to be is not accomplished by our might but by His Spirit.
