“The things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
I often go to bed much later than I should because I just don’t want to give up the evening. There’s simply too much I have to do and too much I want to do after that. And sometimes I do what I want to do instead of what I have to do and then stay up trying to catch up. You know what I mean.
In the hustle and bustle of life, distractions abound. They come in various forms, such as the ping of a notification, the demands of daily responsibilities and the allure of worldly pleasures. These are the “things that are seen,” and they command our attention. Amidst this cacophony, it’s easy to lose sight of what is unseen and eternal: the profound mystery, wonder and satisfying substance of our relationship with God.
Yet, among the unseen things is a force not visible to our eyes but felt in our hearts. It is a living power that continually and creatively makes us aware of Him in any place at any time. It is the Spirit of the living God.
I find it truly amazing that in a world that loudly and glaringly competes for our attention, the Spirit, silent and unseen, still manages to attract me to the Lord over and over again. He doesn’t do so with loud proclamations or flashy displays, but through His quiet whisperings, gentle heart touches and subtle reminders of His reality, His love and His grace.
If the greatest gift of the Father is the Son, then the greatest gift of the Son is the Spirit. So, as we navigate all the possibilities of this day, may God’s Spirit give us ears to hear His silent voice, eyes to see His secret wonders, and a heart to respond to His invisible influence.
