Before boarding “The Icon of the Seas,” the largest cruise ship in the world, I stood watching an overwhelming sight—a sea of luggage being loaded. Thousands of suitcases, each belonging to one of the 10,000 passengers and crew, packed with everything they needed for their journey. Different shapes, different sizes, yet together, they formed an immense burden the ship had to carry across the ocean.
That image stayed with me. It reminded me of the weight Jesus bore—the weight of sin. Just as my suitcase was one among thousands, my sin was part of the unfathomable burden He carried to the cross. Every lie, every theft, every act or attitude of hate or prejudice, lust or greed, pride or arrogance—in all of human history, past, present, and future—rested upon Him.
And yet, just as the ship didn’t sink under the weight of the luggage but carried us to where we needed to go, so Jesus bore the full weight of sin until He arrived at the cross. With His dying breath, He declared, “It is finished.” The price for our redemption was fully paid.
The most astonishing truth? He carried each piece of our sin luggage willingly. His love for each of us is as personal as the weight of our sin. And because of His sacrifice, we no longer have any “baggage” before God. Jesus took it, bore it to Calvary, and left it there forever. All that remains for us is to honor Him by trusting in His unfailing love, especially when life feels its heaviest.
“He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” —Romans 4:25
