“Teach me Your way, LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. I will give thanks to You, Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forever. For Your graciousness toward me is great, and You have saved my soul from the depths of Sheol” (Psalm 86:11-13).
Like David, I want the Lord to illumine my understanding and help me to walk in His truth, even though my flesh often digs in its heels. I want my heart to be singularly His, despite the pull of the world and the temptations of the evil one. I want my heart to be full of thanksgiving to Him instead of a constant simmering of discontentment. I want others to know how marvelous He is. I know He has been enormously gracious to me, giving me infinitely more than I deserve, and most of all, I know He has saved me from a life and an eternity without Him.
Could not every believer utter these words? Does this not reflect the deepest sentiments of our spirits?
The good news is that a heart that so desires these things is already well on its way to seeing them realized. The persistence of the desire – not our flawless performance – is the evidence of the work God is doing. These are the promptings of God’s Holy Spirit living within each of us.
The journey to greater realization of these heavenly aspirations is one that will last a lifetime, so our appropriate goal is not to “arrive” but simply to seek to be receptive and responsive to Him moment by moment as He continues faithfully doing His work. Our divine desires are always the product of His divine work.
