“Don’t leave me here,” pleaded Arthur Curtis in a whisper, as he sat at his desk covering his eyes with one hand, as though praying. He longed to return to his life, consisting of a loving wife and daughter and a thriving career as an executive. However, that life was only a part of a role he was playing. In reality, his name was Gerald Raigan, a divorced, alcoholic actor whose career was in jeopardy and whose angry ex-wife nagged and hounded him. This scene is from one of my favorite episodes of the classic television series, The Twilight Zone.
We may not fully relate to Gerald’s plight, but we all have moments where we wish for a different reality. Unlike him, we might not be longing for a fantasy but a deeper connection with the true substance of our lives hidden in Christ. As Colossians 3:3 says, “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” We access that reality through engagement with Him.
So today, Lord, we ask You to help us enjoy Your presence within the free-form unfolding of our day. Let us see Your hand in the spontaneous moments, feel Your touch in the simple joys, and be comforted by Your embrace in the vexing challenges that come our way. Thank You for being the constant in our lives, the real and unchanging foundation upon which we stand. Unlike Gerald Raigan, who longed for an illusion, we long for the true reality found in You. You are the life we most want to enjoy today.
