“From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2).
The news broadcasts the latest heartbreaking, senseless tragedy, the ominous virus statistics, and the disturbing political and geopolitical trends. These are indeed distressing times of change and uncertainty. But I am encouraged today by a single phrase “The rock higher than I.”
There are some problems that are just over my head, incalculable and unpredictable. There are some waves that are too high; I don’t have a big enough “boat” of resources. Some challenges too steep; I don’t have the strength or energy. Some solutions that are beyond my reach. Even on my tippy toes. Even with a ladder. Sometimes my vision is too obstructed by the jungle of issues I see from ground level.
But there is a rock that is higher than I.
This rock, however, is not made of stone. This Rock is a Person. This Rock is Jesus Himself. He takes me by the hand and lifts me up to give me a clearer perspective, a perspective of faith and hope. He takes me higher up where the air is clean and refreshing to enjoy His peace above the chaos. He lifts me up to sit with Him and enjoy His presence and to be reassured that I belong to Him. He is the ever-present Rock that is not only higher than I, but higher than ALL
