Last night the news broadcast posted a picture from a viewer of a gorgeous sunset that was an astonishing display of God’s artistry. The sky was stretched out like a giant canvas, streaked with hues of pink and powdery cloud puffs suspended majestically above the Washington D.C. skyline.
It reminds me of my childhood, when after the days grew dark, and after playing with my friends, I could go home. Home where the lights beckoned me from a distance. Home where there was warmth. Home, my refuge from the encroaching darkness.
I can never return to my childhood home. Both of my parents have gone to be with the Lord and there is now an empty lot where the house once stood.. But sunsets remind me that my heavenly Father is always at home. They represent the welcoming light of His presence, beckoning me to Himself as my refuge from the dark places of life.
“He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call… But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge…” (Psalm 147:8-11; 73:28).
